Coconut Imports
In 2017, imports of coconuts worldwide stood at 611K tonnes, going down by -14.8% against the previous year level. In general, it indicated a remarkable increase from 2007 to 2017: the total imports volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last ten years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2017, coconut imports increased by +78.0% against its level of 2013. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014, when it surged by 40% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, coconut imports attained its maximum volume of 717K tonnes in 2016, falling back in the following year.
In value terms, coconut imports totaled $334M in 2017. In general, coconut imports continue to indicate a strong expansion. Over the period under review, coconut imports attained its maximum level in 2017, and are likely to continue its growth in the near future.
Coconut Imports By Country
Malaysia (166K tonnes), and Thailand (147K tonnes) represented roughly 51% of total imports of coconuts in 2017. China (50K tonnes) occupied a 8% share (based on tonnes) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the U.S. (6%), and the United Arab Emirates (5%). The following importers – China, Hong Kong SAR (22K tonnes), Pakistan (20K tonnes), Nigeria (16K tonnes), the Netherlands (16K tonnes), the Dominican Republic (16K tonnes), and Singapore (11K tonnes) together made up 17% of total imports.
From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by Nigeria (+284.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest coconut markets worldwide were Thailand ($64M), the U.S. ($45M), and Malaysia ($29M), together comprising 42% of global imports.
Thailand (+35.1% per year) recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the imports, in terms of the main importing countries, over the last 10 years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Coconut Import Prices By Country
In 2017, the average import price for coconuts amounted to $546 per tonne, rising by 31% against the previous year. Overall, it indicated a prominent expansion from 2007 to 2017: the import price increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last ten years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013, an increase of 44% against the previous year level. In that year, average import price for coconut attained its maximum level of $614 per tonne. From 2014 to 2017, growth of average import price for coconut stood at a somewhat lower level.
Import prices varied noticeably by country of destination; the country with the highest import price was the U.S. ($1,265 per tonne), while Nigeria ($5 per tonne) was among the lowest.
From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of import prices was attained by China (+16.6% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
