Sue’s Sky is recognized for its outstanding writing, design and overall market appeal out of thousands of books submitted into the Book Excellence Awards.

Sue’s Sky by Lulu Buck is an imaginative children’s picture book that promotes acceptance, inclusion and friendship. The story follows the adventures of a young girl named Sue and her friends during recess at school. While Sue sees the sky as blue, she learns that many of her friends see the sky as a different color, depending on where they are from. Many kids on the playground think this is strange, but Sue accepts others’ perspectives showcasing how our world can become more colorful through acceptance and love. Sue’s Sky was named a Finalist in the Children’s Inspirational category of the Book Excellence Awards. The awards competition is dedicated to recognizing both independent and traditionally published authors and publishers for excellence in writing, design and overall market appeal in over 100 countries around the world.

Thank you for this incredible recognition. I am truly humbled and honored to receive this award,” says author Lulu Buck. With over 24-years’ experience as a public educator, Buck was inspired to write a story that would allow children to feel safe in sharing their identities freely. A role model, leader and award-winning author, Buck serves as a real-life example of the positive actions we can all take to build a better society—and a better world. “We all want a space where we can walk into free of judgment, full of acceptance, and where we know we will be heard and seen…it was very important to me to create a book and curriculum to support spaces for our children to be accepting and loving…I truly just wanted to make a difference as any and every educator does.”

Full of whimsy and adventure, Sue’s Sky is a beautiful book that teaches acceptance and inclusion through the metaphors of skies. “We can’t be like the kids on the playground anymore, calling kids weird for thinking and being different. We need to be more like Sue, accepting, loving…going through the lessons of creating safe spaces, learning about our judgments, and formally teaching anti-bullying are all a part of creating a foundation of being able to share our identities freely,” says Buck. The book encourages young readers to celebrate each other’s differences and accept new perspectives of the world around them. This is designed to create a safe space for readers to step into their true identity and feel confident in being themselves.

Written in creative, gentle verse, the story is brought to life with vivid, colorful illustrations that help showcase the important themes and lessons of the story. “A big thank you goes to my talented illustrator Chrys ZYX [whose] artistic illustrations inspire kids who read this book,” says Buck. Parents, educators, caregivers and librarians will love reading this story aloud over and over again, appreciating the positive messages and ideas, and children will have their minds filled with new possibilities of how wonderful this world can be when we love and accept each other.

Sue’s Sky has received positive reviews from some of the most well-renowned literary organizations, authors, and reviewers around the world. Jessie Tijerina, Director of Cultural Excellence for Greeley-Evans Schools writes, “Unique, powerful, and infinite in its message. Sue’s Sky is a space for healing and honoring our realities.” In addition, parent Sarah Gould writes, “It’s a reminder to us all (not just children) that we all have beauty, uniqueness, and love.”
