Yelena Likhach Calls for Eradicating Poverty With Good Education

Businesswoman and philanthropist, Yelena Likhach urges global efforts to combat poverty through quality education, highlighting the algebra project’s recognition and the urgent need for educational investment in impoverished countries.

Renowned American actor Danny Glover recently took to Facebook to congratulate the Algebra Project on their well-deserved FNBO award from the NEA Foundation for outstanding services to public education. For four decades, this project has played a vital role in enhancing mathematical literacy, a crucial component of quality education for all students.

Mathematics, often referred to as the queen of science, teaches children critical thinking, analytical skills, problem-solving abilities, and technological understanding from an early age. It serves as a foundation for a successful adult career, making it deserving of applause and recognition.

While progress has been made in access to quality education worldwide, many countries still face significant challenges. According to UNICEF, in Europe and Central Asia, more than 95% of children are enrolled in primary education. However, these statistics mask the reality that millions of children are still deprived of an education. Approximately 2 million children miss primary school, 2.4 million adolescents miss secondary school, and an alarming number of children with disabilities remain unaccounted for in education statistics.

The dire situation is particularly pronounced in the poorest countries, such as Guinea in Africa. Guinea allocates less than 0.6% of its modest GDP, amounting to $6 per capita, to education. The country’s schools suffer from overcrowding, inadequate resources, textbook shortages, and underpaid teachers. Shockingly, a quarter of Guinean children aged 6 to 18 do not attend school, exacerbating an already challenging situation. Furthermore, Guinea’s education system is marred by gender discrimination, resulting in severe barriers for girls to access secondary education. Consequently, the country grapples with widespread illiteracy among its female population.

These educational deficiencies have far-reaching consequences on the national scale. Despite possessing abundant natural resources such as gold, diamonds, copper, and bauxite (representing 2/3 of the world’s reserves), Guinea struggles to thrive economically. The country remains heavily reliant on agriculture, with only 24% of the working population engaged in industry. The cycle of poverty and underdevelopment persists, leaving Guinea vulnerable to political instability, as evidenced by the history of military coups.

Breaking this cycle requires targeted interventions. In the case of Guinea and similar countries, investing in education is paramount. Despite receiving significant financial aid over the past 60 years, Africa continues to grapple with poverty, largely due to issues of governance and misused funds. To effect meaningful change, investments should prioritize education from early childhood to university, fostering practical skills alongside theoretical knowledge. This comprehensive approach can empower individuals, uplift communities, and eliminate poverty and dictatorships.

Moreover, private philanthropy should be carefully directed and transparently accounted for. “Like, for example, the Artists for Peace and Justice initiative to support local communities around the world with education, health and dignity programs, for which I once donated 55,000 GBP,” said Yelena Likhach. Initiatives like Artists for Peace and Justice, which support education, health, and dignity programs in local communities worldwide, demonstrate the importance of targeted spending and effective oversight.

In conclusion, Yelena Likhach’s call to eradicate poverty through quality education resonates strongly. By investing in education, particularly in the most impoverished regions, we can break the cycle of dependency, foster sustainable development, and pave the way for a brighter future for all.
