Dr. James Hutson XR Disruptor & Department Head of Art History & Visual Culture at Lindenwood University, was recently selected as Top Lead XR Distributor of the Year for 2023 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) for his outstanding leadership, dedication, and commitment to the industry.
Inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself; only a few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, longevity in the field, other affiliations, and contributions to their communities. With over two decades of experience, Dr. Hutson has certainly proven himself a seasoned and trusted expert in the field. He played a crucial role in creating the Immersive Arts and Culture Hub and XR and Gaming Lab, which serves the entire campus community. Additionally, he leads the VR Champions team, aiming to incorporate immersive experiences into all programs. This ensures that every student, regardless of background, receives an equal education and access to the same experiences. Dr. Hutson is responsible for leading the AI initiative and the AI Ambassadors program. Under his guidance, multiple studies are being conducted to explore the integration of AI into various academic disciplines. Additionally, he is actively involved in teaching students how to prepare themselves for the future as emerging technologies continue to reshape higher education and our everyday lives.
Dr. James Hutson has successfully assembled a team of over 65 researchers from around the world. Together, they are implementing a decentralized collaborative authorship model. The main goal of this model is to harness the power of interdisciplinary collaboration and the diverse perspectives offered by researchers from various fields. By doing so, they aim to overcome the barriers that separate different areas of expertise and effectively address complex and challenging problems. He currently holds the position of editor-in-chief for the International Journal of Emerging and Disruptive Innovation in Education: VISIONARIUM (iJEDIE). This journal serves as an interdisciplinary platform for publishing original peer-reviewed scholarship, data, and research that explores the connections between education and technology.
Before embarking on his professional career path, Dr. Hutson earned his Ph.D. in Art History and Archaeology from the University of Maryland, Master’s in Game Design and Leadership, from Lindenwood University, and a Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence from Capitol Technology University.
Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Hutson has received many awards and accolades and has been recognized worldwide for his accomplishments. Earlier this year, he was selected as one of 5 Rising Leaders to Watch in Education 2023 issued by CIO Times. This year he will be featured in TIP (Top Industry Professionals) Magazine. He will be honored at IAOTP’s annual awards gala at the NYC Plaza Hotel this December for his selection as Top Lead XR Distributor of the Year.
In addition to his successful career, Dr. Hutson has personally taught over 120 online courses, designed, and built 26 award-winning online degrees, and overseen the development of 38 others. This includes ensuring compliance with authentication standards and designing the courses to meet high-quality standards. He served as the head of all online programs and holds certificates in instructional design and online course assessment. Dr. Hutson has authored over 100 books, chapters, periodicals, conference papers, and academic projects, serving as the senior/corresponding author.

Looking back, Dr. Hutson attributes his success to his perseverance, work ethic, and the mentors he has had along the way. When not working, he enjoys traveling and spending time with his family. In the future, he hopes to inspire and influence those getting into the field.
